China Responds to Latest U.S. Remarks on China Tariffs and Reaffirms: Stop Threats and Pressure, Engage in Equal Dialogue
On May 6, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian reiterated at a regular press conference in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's comments in a recent interview that he “will not cancel tariffs on China for the sake of holding talks with China,” saying, “This tariff war was started by the U.S. side, and the Chinese side's attitude is consistent and clear. . Fight, accompany to the end. Talk, the door is open.”
According to brokerage China, U.S. Treasury Secretary Benjamin Bessant said in an interview on May 5 local time that he expects progress in the U.S.-China trade talks in the coming weeks, noting that the 145% tariffs Trump has offered China cannot be sustained in the long term. According to China Daily, Besant also said that “high tariffs on China are unsustainable” and predicted that the trade war between the U.S. and China will be “eased”.
In response to the latest comments from the U.S. side, Lin Jian emphasized that the U.S. side has recently expressed its desire to negotiate with China. There is no winner in a tariff war. If the U.S. side really wants to solve the problem through dialog and negotiation, it should stop threatening and pressuring and engage in dialog with China on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit.
